Important Note
Applications will be accepted for any breast health or breast cancer screening, treatment, education, or support project in the listed counties. However, projects that specifically address the objectives outlined in the following "Statement of Need" on the following page will be given priority. All requests for science research funding should be directed to the Komen Foundation's Award and Research Grant Program. More information on research funding is available at www.komen.org/grants.
GAPS IN BREAST HEALTH SERVICES
The purpose of this grant program is to address the breast health and breast cancer screening, treatment, education or prevention needs of Kent, Montcalm, Muskegon and Ottawa counties. Through our community profile, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grand Rapids Affiliate has indentified the foloowing needs:
- Increase awareness and educate women about the need for and value of breast cancer screening ONLY IF the availability of screening services is assured by a collaborating partner.
- Supplement the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) by funding mammograms for women who qualify for screening but have exceeded the program's caseload.
- Provide diagnostic services for women under age 40 who are at increased risk for breast cancer.
STATEMENT OF NEED
The above "gaps in breast health services" are of primary importance, however through the community needs assessment of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grand Rapids Affiliate, we have identified the following additional priorities:
- Reach women who are uninsured or underinsured (especially in Montcalm County) and reach racial minorities, including African-American (especially in Muskegon County), Asian, Hispanic (especially in Ottawa County) and Native American women.
- Offer multi-ligual services for women whom English is not their native language.
- Create a collaborative program to help women navigate the breast healthcare system towards the goal of obtaining services.
